Exodus 22:1–4 Easy: “How should you punish a man who steals a bull or a sheep? If the man kills the animal or sells it, then he cannot give it back. So, he must pay five bulls for the one he stole. Or he must pay four sheep for the one he stole. He must pay for stealing. If he owns nothing, then he will be sold as a slave. But if the man still has the animal and you find it, that man must give the owner two animals for every animal he stole. It doesn’t matter if the animal was a bull, a donkey, or a sheep. “If a thief is killed while trying to break into a house at night, then no one will be guilty for killing him. But if this happens during the day, the one who killed him will be guilty of murder.
These verses prescribes repayment and penalties for stolen livestock (double or more; sale if unable to pay) and allows defensive action in some cases. When God gave Israel laws about restitution, He wasn’t just setting rules, He was revealing His heart. These verses show a God who cares deeply about restoring what was lost, healing what was damaged, and protecting the vulnerable. Even in matters of theft and conflict, the Lord wove justice with mercy, responsibility with compassion. In a world where people often take without thinking, God calls His people to repair, restore, and make things right. When we are the ones who’ve been wronged, He reminds us that He sees, He knows, and He defends. Nothing stolen from your life goes unnoticed by Him. He is the God who restores double, fourfold, fivefold, far beyond what was taken. Sometimes the “thief” in our lives isn’t a person but a season, a hardship, or a wound. Yet God remains the One who steps in, protects, and restores. His justice is never cold; it is always wrapped in His care for His children.
Father God, thank You and praise You for being the God who restores what has been taken and heals what has been broken. Where loss has touched my life, bring Your restoring power. Where I have wronged others, give me the courage to make things right. Cover my home, my heart, and my steps with Your protection. Teach me to walk in justice, mercy, and peace. Love You, thank You, praise You and give You all the honor and glory in Jesus Precious name Amen.
